A World of Pure Imagination

After finishing up our reading of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory last week, and with their expressed desire to see the Johnny Depp version of the movie sometime soon, I thought it important that the kids see the Gene Wilder version first. So tonight we watched, and I was transported back to my own childhood with them. It had been... damn, I don't know HOW long since I had seen it last.

What a great movie... although the opening chocolate montage nearly did me in. My mouth was literally watering, and it took all the willpower I possess not to break into the chocolate chips that - even now, hours later - call to me from the kitchen with their wicked siren song.

And how I love Gene Wilder. Adore. The. Man. The only other actor that compares to him on my pure love meter is Dick Van Dyke. I tell you - when those two pass on, I might not be able to get out of bed for a few weeks.

But I digress.

What I loved most about tonight was that my kids wanted to watch the whole movie again, immediately. When that wasn't possible (it was already nearly 9 o'clock and a chapter of Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator awaited), what scene did they choose to see, when the option was offerred up? Yup. The scary boat speeding through the tunnel with disturbing images scene.

How cool is that? I have freaky freaky kids.

Oh, they just know good cinema when they see it! Was last night really the first time they saw the movie? It is one of my favorites. And Darian generally hides her face during that boat ride scene. :)

You going to the Johnny Depp version this weekend?

You purist you. I'm going to see the new movie with Johnny Depp in it first so I can truly enjoy it. Then I'll go through and reread and review and compare, contrast, and critque.

I thought I was the only one who considered a bag of chocolate chips fair game.

what the HELL is a "wicked siren song?", how is it that chocolate chips can make it and where do i get one?

Nuthin' wrong with having freaky kids. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

We just finished it ourselves (I made a point of hitting the UW bookstore before the movie opened so we'd have a copy w/o Johnny Depp all over it - not that I object to Depp or anything, but you know...) - started it Friday evening, finished it tonight. I think if the boy'd had a parent with the stamina, he'd have done it in one sitting. As it was, it was a yeoman effort ;-)

I'm all for trying him on the Wilder movie now - we'll see...

my 5 year old son and i have seen the gene wilder version about 4200 times. we LOVE it. it's comforting and special to us. we liked the Depp version too, I actually loved the ending, nice and mushy.
i left the theater fending off my overwhelming desire for a very cold, dark, chocolate bar though! i keep little hershey bars in the freezer for when we watch the original!!

I keep my chocolate chips on the highest shelf in the cupboard over the stove, just to help ensure their survival that much longer.

Since I'm only 5 ft. 2 inches, every little bit of deterrent helps...!

Okay, we finally did it - and the Wilder version was a huge hit. Now we're gonna try him on the current version ;)
